Making 4A-GE ecu PC-programmable

    6.3.2006

I have driven Starlet with the modified ecu for the first time! Injection worked fine! All the recent modifications seem to work well, and the ignition now stays exactly where set. Tuning was made only in carage, running the engine with different RPM, but still it worked on road very well.

After last update to this page, I've tested some toyota igniters also. 4a-ge's own unit seems to control dwell angle by itself, which works for me. Some other, possibly unit from camry, doesn't control dwell, so it might work fine, if there comes a need to control it by ecu.

    23.2.2006

Up to this day, the system had only one processor, now it has two. "Old", slightly better processor works as master and new smaller one as slave. New processor controls ignition by itself, only timing values come from the master.  This way ignition controlling is much more accurate than before.

    5.2.2006

Ecu has been now tested on Starlet, where it should be installed first. Engine starts fine, actually even better than the Corolla. Temperature sensors now tell real temperature, not just some values. Throttle-pump is done, although I need to make minor modifications to algorithm. It seems that it needs to enrich more when starting to press pedal and currently it enriches too long time.

    28.1.2006

Additional maps are working now, for example maps that correct ignition and injection based on air & water-temperature. Still need to scale temperature sensors so, that ecu knows what the temperature really is. Next stage is to implement throttle-pump effect somehow.

    26.1.2006

Car starts now much better, modifications to starting-program worked well. Still some problems starting the engine when cold. Not a big problem though.

    25.1.2006

Car doesn't start very well and I found the reason; there is about 60-70 degrees ignition advance when cranking, perhaps bit too much. :-)

    14.1.2006

Ecu has been now tested in a car first time. Car ran quite normally, ignition advance seems to be as set, sensors work normally, everything seems to work. First there was not enough fuel to keep engine running, but after small enrichment the engine started fine.

     - Injection maps 15x19, controller uses 4096 points
     - Additional maps for air and water temp
     - Acceleration enrichment
     - Starting enrichment
     - Uses 4A-GE:n standard distributor, no additional cam/crank-sensors needed
     - Ignition using toyota components (Timing by ECU)
     - Throttleposition or MAP-sensor
     - Realtime adjustment while engine running
     - Realtime dashboard at PC-screen
     - RPM limiter, max rpm ~12000 rpm
     - Serialport for PC-connection

    Plans:
     - Datalogging (partitially done)
     - LCD-dashboard (partitially done)
     - Marking lean/rich points to map (partitially done)
     - Direct ignition
     - Launch control
     - Change light
